WHEN TO GO
The São Joaquim National Park can be visited all year round.
Stands out the visitation of the upper region during the winter, with great possibility of snow occurrence in the Church Hill area.
In the lower part there is still no areas belonging to ICMBio, requiring the landowner’s authorization to access the park.
The opening hours are the same for both parts of the park: from 8h00 to 17h00.
The São Joaquim National Park, established in 1961, is located in the mountainous region of the State of Santa Catarina. The Park covers an area of 49,300 hectares, protecting the remnants of Araucaria Forests. Access to the upper region is done by the municipalities of Urubici and Bom Jardim da Serra. It also has areas in the cities of Orleans and Grão-Pará, located in the lower part of the Serra do Mar.
The 133-million-year geological formation, composed of volcanic rock and sandstone, is a conducive place to recharge and discharge of the Guarani Aquifer.
The nearest airport with regular flights is in the state capital, Florianópolis, about 180 km from the park entrance in the town of Urubici.
There are two access roads. The main route leaves Florianópolis following the BR-282 highway, towards the city of Lages, in the town of Bom Retiro. Then it turns left onto SC-438 road (Cauldron Mountains - Serra do Panelão), arriving to Urubici after 24km. The town is 27 km from the park on paved road.
The second access is a scenic and longer route, leaving Florianópolis by the BR-101 highway towards Tubarão/SC. Arriving in this city, it turns right to Orleans and from there to the SC-438 highway, known as River Trail Mountains Highway - Estrada da Serra do Rio do Rastro. The road is full of viewpoints. Passing the Mountains the visitor arrives in Bom Jardim da Serra, where the Orange Trees Canyon (Cânion Laranjeiras) can be visited. From Bom Jardim da Serra, Urubici is located 80 km away down the same road.
There is no entrance fee, but access to Church Hill/Holed Stone is limited, and the city of Urubici requires the accompaniment of a guide for buses entering the town.
Permits for visits should be taken at the headquarters of São Joaquim National Park: Av Felicíssimo Rodrigues Sobrinho, 1542 - Bairro Esquina - Urubici - SC, between 8h00 and 12h00 and between 13h00 and 17h00.
By institutional determination, other public activities are temporarily interrupted, and all trails, horseback riding, hiking, gliding, and crossings are vetted.
Church Hill and Pedra Furada
The Church Hill (Morro da Igreja), a rock formation with a pierced stone (Pedra Furada) on a mountain in a vast valley, is located 30 km from the center of Urubici. The path with signposts goes through a rural area full of fog and Araucaria trees. At the top lies a stand of Cindacta project (Integrated Center for Air Defense and Traffic Control).
Santa Barbara Fields
In the center of the park, region known as Santa Barbara Fields - Campos de Santa Barbara - , there are high areas with heights above 1,650 meters., where there is interaction between the vegetation of natural grasslands and coniferous forests.
WHERE TO STAY
The city of Urubici, located 27 km from the park, has a large network of accommodation, especially the rural inns.
